BY AIR VIA MAPUTO (MOZAMBIQUE)

Some international airlines such as Ethiopian, Kenya Airways, South African, Qatar Airways, Turkish Airlines, and TAP Portugal fly directly to Maputo. When flying via Nairobi or Addis Ababa, you must present a yellow fever vaccination certificate when entering Mozambique, even though you spent only an hour or two at these airports. For more, please see health information.

There is only one flight, operated by LAM (Linhas Aèreas de Mozambique) from Maputo to Inhambane per day. According to the current time table, departure time from Maputo (MPM) is 12:30 hrs.. The arrival time to Inhambane (INH) depends on the particular day of travel; on certain days, the flight has a stopover in Vilanculos (VNX), and on these days, arrival time to Inhambane will be at 15:00 hrs.. If there is no stopover in Vilanculos, flight time to Inhambane is just 55 minutes.

It is our experience that the LAM flight from Maputo to Inhambane is frequently overbooked on the day the Tofo Advanced Study Week will start (September 01), so it is advisable to travel the day before (August 31) and enjoy one extra day of rest at Tofo Beach.

Please note that buying separate tickets for your intercontinental flight to Maputo and for the LAM flight to Inhambane is often much cheaper than to purchase one through-ticket!

Usually, international airlines can check your bags through to Inhambane. However, you will have to pick them from the belt at Maputo airport, carry them through customs and to LAM check-in in the domestic terminal.
On the return flight, however, please note that LAM in Inhambane is not able to check your luggage through to any point beyond Maputo, so please collect your luggage in Maputo and check it in for your international flight.

BY AIR VIA JOHANNESBURG (SOUTH AFRICA) - MAPUTO

Many international airlines offer flights to and from Johannesburg. From Johannesburg flights are offered to Maputo by LAM (Linhas Aèreas de Mozambique) or South African Airways (a member of Star Alliance). The early morning LAM flight from Johannesburg leaves at 8:40 hrs. am and reaches Maputo at 9:40 hrs.. The South African Airways flight is about one hour later (09:45 - 10:45 hrs.). In Maputo, you can directly connect to the LAM flight to Inhambane (departure time: 12:30 hrs.), which is the only flight per day going to Inhambane.

It is our experience that the LAM flight from Maputo to Inhambane is frequently overbooked on the day the Tofo Advanced Study Week will start (September 01), so it is advisable to travel the day before (August 31) and enjoy one extra day of rest at Tofo Beach.

Please note that buying separate tickets for your intercontinental flight to Johannesburg/Maputo and for the LAM flight to Inhambane is often much cheaper than to purchase one through-ticket!

Usually, international airlines can check your bags through to Maputo or may be even Inhambane. However, you will have to pick them from the belt at Maputo airport, carry them through customs and to LAM check-in in the domestic terminal.
On the return flight, however, please note that LAM in Inhambane is not able to check your luggage through to any point beyond Johannesburg, so you probably will have to collect your luggage from the carousel in Johannesburg O.R. Tambo International airport and check it in again. Please reserve at least 3 hours for that.

After the long flight from Europe or the US, it may be advisable to spend one night in a hotel at Johannesburg O.R. Tambo Airport, for example in the Southern Sun Hotel or the Garden Court Hotel. Both of them are easily reached within minutes from the airport by complimentary shuttle (departure from the bus terminal behind the Intercontinental Hotel). There are other hotels at or near the airport and our local travel agency, Terra Agua Ceu, can help you book one of these.

BY AIR VIA JOHANNESBURG (SOUTH AFRICA) - VILANCULOS (MOZAMBIQUE)

South African Airlink (a subsidiary of South African Airways, SAA) offers a daily flight from Johannesburg O.R. Tambo International Airport to Vilanculos (VNX, Mozambique). Departure time is 11:30 hrs. and the flight time is 1 hour and 40 minutes. Note that South African Airlink allows no check-in luggage heavier than 20 kg (unless you fly to Johannesburg on an SAA flight).

Vilanculos is an approximately 4-hour drive north of Inhambane / Tofo. We can organize transfer for you from Vilanculos Airport to Tofo. The price will depend on the number of persons to be transferred; it is 12000 MZN (about 200 US$) per car, so for 3 passengers, it would be about 4000 MZN each (about 67 US$).

AIRPORT TRANSFER FROM INHAMBANE TO TOFO

Praia do Tofo is 21 km from Inhambane airport. Our local travel agency, Terra Agua Ceu, will offer airport transfer, if you let us know your arrival time in advance. The fee will be 750 MZN (approx. US $ 12.50) per person (TBC). If you take a regular taxi to Tofo from Inhambane airport, you should not pay more than 1200 MZN (approx. US $ 24; negotiation can help to reduce the rate to about 1000 MZN or less).

Note that there is no opportunity to change money at the airport. The Terra Agua Ceu shuttle will stop at the ATM at the petrol station 5 km before Tofo; note that this ATM only accepts Visa and Mastercard cards. American Express cards are generally not accepted in Mozambique. At the petrol station near Tofo, there is also a small branch of the BCI bank; if you do not arrive on a Sunday, you can change money there.

Note that car rentals are not available at Inhambane airport, but pre-booked cars can be delivered there.

BY ROAD (FROM JOHANNESBURG)

It is at least an 18-hour trip from Johannesburg to Inhambane (via Maputo suburbs). The road from Maputo to Inhambane (about 480 km) is quite busy. Also, there are usually many police checkpoints, so your progress will likely be slow. Under all circumstances, avoid driving at night!

VISA FOR MOZAMBIQUE

Residents of all countries except SADC (South African Development Cooperation) member states and Argentina will need a visa to enter Mozambique. Visa can be obtained from the Mozambican Embassy in your home country (~120 US$); allow at least two and better four weeks for the procedure, but do not apply for the visa earlier than this. If you decide to employ a commercial visa service, the costs can be substantially higher.
If there is no Mozambican Embassy in your country, you can also obtain the visa at the port of entry (~100 US$). (Even if there is a Mozambican Embassy in your country, you can obtain visa at the port of entry according to new regulations, but in reality, this depends on the immigration commander there...).

We will send Letters of Invitation to all registered participants; these are needed for the visa application.
